Freising factory significantly more energy-efficient

For a good year HAWE Hydraulik SE, Munich, has been represented with its Freising factory in the "Energy-efficiency network Munich/Upper Bavaria". By signing up, the company has committed itself to reduce substantially energy consumption and CO2 emissions in this production site over the next three-and-half years and save 10% of its previous energy demands.

The energy saving measures introduced since then have been so promising that HAWE Hydraulik has now joined the newly established energy-efficiency network of South Bavaria through its plant in Dorfen. During the kick-off event of said network in Munich Alexander Volodarski, environment manager with HAWE Hydraulik, gave an account of experiences made so far in the factory in Freising, which shall now to be transferred to the plant in Dorfen.

During the last few months a total of 44 steps have been recorded, how to utilize energy more efficiently or to make sensible and potential energy savings. 12 of these steps proved to be so economical after implementation that their costs were amortized in less than one year. Thus, from 2009 to 2010 energy consumption for the factory's nearly 13,000 sqm came down by 43 MWh in electric power and 73 MWh in gas, which equals a reduction of CO2 emissions by 23 and 14 tons respectively. Based on the measures implemented in 2010 the savings earmarked for 2011 are a minimum of 205 MWh in electric power (111 tons CO2) and 120 MWh gas (24 tons CO2). With additional new energy saving measures projected these figures are likely to turn out even higher.

Significant savings were to be felt, among other things, from changed regulation of the different zones of the concrete core activation controlling indoor heat and climatic cooling. Further potential was identified in adjusting to down times the air volume flows for the factory floor ventilation and by adapting operations of the compressors to the actual pressurized air requirements. Simply turning off the lighting in those sections of the factory that were not staffed also brought electric energy consumption significantly down.

It is HAWE Hydraulik's environmental business policy to be proactively involved in energy-efficiency networks. Fundamental for an environmentally-friendly production are the successful audits certifying that the factories in Dorfen, Kirchheim, Freising and Sachsenkam comply with the environmental protection standard DIN EN ISO 14001.

The energy-efficiency networks are based on the "30 pilot networks” promotional program and the climate protection initiative of the German Federal Environment Ministry (BMU). The program's objective is to increase the energy efficiency of the participating companies and to lower CO2 emission by 10%. If successful the partaking companies would be improving their energy efficiency faster than the industry average. The project is based on an intensive exchange of experiences between the companies participating in the network as well as practical scientific consultation.
